ANTI-OPPRESSION PSYCHOTHERAPY LECTURES

The impact of intersectional violence in everyday life can be overwhelming, taking a toll on how we feel about ourselves and on our ability to make decisions, or even just to enjoy life.

In this 90-minute-long lecture, Roberta K. Timothy and Mercedes Umaña García present the background and principles of Anti-Oppression Psychotherapy. Utilizing real life examples, the lecture provides inspiring clues to deal with the effect of intersectional violence in everyday life and to foster resistance.

ANTI-OPPRESSION PSYCHOTHERAPY TRAINING

Comprising two modules, this introductory training examines in detail the principles of Anti-Oppression Psychotherapy, their theoretical and empirical foundations, as well as their application in therapists’ and clients’ lives. The training combines lectures, exercises, case scenarios and discussions. Learners can access their training anywhere using a computer, laptop, phone or tablet.

Anti-Oppression Psychotherapy is grounded on the understanding that psychotherapy must address the systemic impact of violence and social exclusion transnationally and trans-generationally in practitioners’ and clients’ lives. This process facilitates a more solid therapeutic alliance as it allows for therapist and client to engage in more authentic and transparent dialogues and interactions, reducing the potential for re-victimization of clients.

  • If you or your organization are interested in learning how to address power, oppressions, intersectionality, and unearned privilege in your mental health services and programs
  • If you are looking for ways to enhance your knowledge and skills to better understand how your clients’ concerns in psychotherapy are impacted by racism, anti-Black racism, anti-indigeneity, classism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, as well as violence/discrimination based on spirituality/religious affiliation and other oppressions/social determinants of health,
  • If you ready to learn innovative ways to assist your clients in processing the impact of oppressions in their lives and finding pathways to resistance and growth
  • If you are interested in being accountable and unlearning your own biases, prejudices and how they manifest in your therapeutic approaches and interactions
  • If you are interested in connecting with other mental health practitioners and psychotherapists who are committed to transforming the field of counselling and psychotherapy
